About Obesity

Obesity is a chronical and severe condition of overweight. It can be caused by a number of elements. The international standard for measuring obesity is the BMI (Body Mass Index).

Morbid obesity is typically defined as being 100 lbs. or more over ideal body weight or having a Body Mass Index of 40 or higher. Morbid obesity is a serious disease and must be treated as such. It is a chronic disease, meaning that morbid obesity symptoms build slowly over an extended period of time.

Health effects of morbid obesity

Severe obesity damages the body by its mechanical, metabolic and physiological adverse effects on normal bodily function. These "co-morbidities" affect nearly every organ in the body in some way. The cumulative effect of these co-morbidities can interfere with a normal and productive life, cause endless frustration and can seriously shorten life.

Physical complaints such as high blood pressure, heart disseases, high cholesterol, diabetes mellitus, arthralgia, sleep apnea, respiratory insufficiency, heartburn, reflux disease and reflux nocturnal aspiration,..
